Envirothon TeamThe Envirothon is a science competition organized locally by the York County Conservation District.  The focus is on learning about the parts of our local ecosystems and becoming good stewards of the land.  On May 2nd,  students competed with 65 other teams from around York County at the annual event held at John Rudy County Park.  The South Eastern Intermediate School team came home with the sixth highest overall score.  We also earned first place in the forestry category; third, in the current event; and fourth place in wildlife.  The students did a tremendous job this year and proudly represented South Eastern School District.

This year’s essay theme was “Why is the Constitution Important to Me?”  Congratulations to the following Kennard-Dale students: Josh Amberman, for placing first in the 10th grade category and Joey Thomas, for placing second in the 12th grade category.  Along with the essay contest, the AMVETS sponsor the AMVETS against Drug & Alcohol Abuse (AADAA) poetry or story contest for grades 9-12.  Congratulations to Rachel Macas, a KD junior, who placed first at the local competition and third at the state level and Katelyn Golden, a KD senior, who placed third at the local level.  All winners were invited to attend an Americanism recognition ceremony at the AMVETS Post 22 in Hanover where they read their essays, and received certificates and various monetary awards.

Congratulations to Kennard-Dale seniors Katelyn Golden, Maddy Miller, and Allison Rake  for attaining the distinction of 2018 PSMLA Global Scholars Graduates!  The PSMLA Global Scholars Program parallels programs in other states and is designed to provide an environment that fosters forward, global thinking that will prepare today’s students for personal and professional success in the global community and economy.  This year, eleven schools in the state of Pennsylvania (two from York County, Dallastown and Kennard-Dale) were recognized for their Global Scholars Program.  For their efforts, students receive a certificate and a Global Scholars Honor Cord to wear at graduation.

In March, the World Language Department at South Eastern Middle School celebrated National Foreign Language Month.  This year’s theme was Languages Lead Us on a Path to Understanding Other Cultures.  To help celebrate, the World Language Department sponsored several activities.  Our 7th and 8th grade students had the opportunity to participate in after-school activities like pretzel making, foreign language movie night, French painting, and listening to a career Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State talk about her career using foreign languages.  During the school day students made signs to promote World Language learning, learned sign language, and participated in a World Language trivia Kahoot game.  Fun was had by all!

In addition, the World Language Department sponsored the National Foreign Language Month poster contest.  All entries were displayed in the cafeteria and SEMS staff members voted for three winners who each received a gift card to Starbucks.   Thanks to everyone (students and staff members) who made this year’s National Foreign Language Month a success!
